The oldest formal quality in my work is color. The intrigue of its psychology, history, my current focus is on de-centering western color narratives and prioritizing my identity in hopes of reimagining a new color system. The first of works explores yellow, black and blue, fuchsia and orange. These works have left me curious. If color that we understand is aligned to cognitive and psychosocial development through the lens of western identities based on race, gender and class, can I create a lexicon of color that regains the autonomy of my identity as a queer black woman with ancestry connected to the American south through painting.
